WHAT IS IT ABOUT ?

IN ORIGIN, A PRIME ROMAN ...
In 2002, the SF British novelist Richard
Morgan publishes what will be the first book of a successful trilogy: Modified
Carbon. Two years later, the novel is awarded the Philip K. Dick Award. It
takes a decade to see the adventures of Takeshi Kovacs transposed on the
screen, under the impetus of Netflix and Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) The
American giant has not skimped on the means to adapt this visually ambitious
cyberpunk work whose action takes place ... in 2384. The series does not
hesitate to draw its inspiration from the cult films SF, like Blade Runner,
especially when it comes to the plans of Bay City, fictional earthen city .

THE RESULT: A GOOD SERIES OF ACTION
Although Altered Carbon is set in the
future, it is a police series, with a red thread, an investigation, accompanied
by a good dose of action. And to camp the former military Takeshi, the Swedish
actor Joel Kinnaman had to work hard, assuring himself his stunts, as he
explained to us: "It was really an important aspect for me C was my goal
and I wanted to be prepared, I trained for 6 months, with professional stuntmen
working for five hours a day. " In good self-respecting cyberpunk series,
the hero of Altered Carbon is a former mercenary, disillusioned by the system,
who finds a way to escape his condition.
The series plunges us into a world where
immortality is almost possible - on the sole condition that the pile containing
all the data of a human being, is not destroyed. Only the rich can actually
afford to live for decades. Altered Carbon also raises interesting questions
about the risks of this new technology. "This series is for science
fiction fans but we wanted to reach a wider audience," explained Kinnaman.
"It's visually bluffing, we've never seen it on TV, there's also a
dramatic dimension, two love stories, the series also raises interesting
philosophical questions, but it's still entertaining."
Season 1 of Altered Carbon is to be seen
on February 2 on Netflix. And for more seriesphiles, know that it is Miguel
Sapochnik who realizes the first episode. The very one to whom we owe The
Battle of the Bastards in Game of Thrones .
Altered Carbon is a coherent, highly
intelligent SF universe, where many centuries after our current era, humanity
has colonized other planets and managed to extract the human soul in a chip
that it can transplant into the body, which then becomes envelope. We are in
pure Cartesianism, where the mind controls the body and not the other way
round.
Intrigue well tied, special effects
successful, exploitation of the universe in all the paradoxes that entails such
a technology. But...
The ambitions posted, which in my opinion
are rising to the level of the behemoths of moments like The Expanse or
Westworld, are not at the rendezvous. The series is not missed but it is fair
in certain facilities:
- a lack of subtlety of the characters,
especially the main protagonist
- big strings seen and reviewed in movies
and series of the genre
- a catch-all scenario, between
investigation, thriller, denouncing dystopia and too big twists.
Where Westworld keeps its consistency and
scenario intelligence, Altered Carbon sends everything to 3/4 of the season.
Where Black Mirror exploits perfectly the
map of dystopia, AC sinks into a Manichaeism, especially through certain
characters like Quellcrist Falconer and Takeshi Kovacs, insipid to death. Why
not have searched more the Bancroft family, much more interesting and bringing
more reflections to each meeting?
It is still a good entertainment thanks
to the atmosphere of the city of Bay City and some meta reflections brought
here and there during the season.
