A Christmas
Story shows us the tribulations of an American family during the Christmas
holidays in 1940. Ralphie, the rather shy and naive boy (Billingsley), wants to
receive an airgun as a gift. But he does not seem to be able to convince his
mother.
A Christmas
Story is hilarious, very well interpreted and nostalgic for those who grew up
in the 40s. This film is a real classic and it makes us laugh to tears. The
most memorable scenes are those that allow us to hear Ralphie's thoughts. This
process has been used in coming of age films such as Stand by Me and the TV
series The Wonder Years.
Nothing is
forced and everything is treated with a light humor that does not become
offensive or in bad taste. Peter Billingsley is excellent (I've never seen him
in other movies, it's a shame) and Melinda Dillon is sometimes skeptical. She
plays the role of the mother who is much smarter than her husband.
The
brilliantly written script is based on the story of John Shepherd In God We
Trust, All Others Pay Cash. Shepherd is also the narrator in the original
English version. The film is directed by Bob Clark, the director of Porky's
(believe it or not). A Christmas Story is perfect for the holiday season and
remains a real classic to revisit often.
