A CHRISTMAS PRINCE
Duration: 1h 32min, Movie: American, Directed in 2017, by: Alex
Zamm
With: Rose McIver, Tom Knight, Richard Ashton, Theo Devaney
Synopsis: It's Christmas, a woman who dreams of becoming a
journalist meets a foreign prince charming.
It's been a long time since we had had a cult Christmas movie: Mum
I missed the plane came out 27 years ago (yes, already and yes, you're getting
old) and Love Actually there is 14 years old. While certainly many films
(excluding animation) came to brighten up our holiday season, but none has actually
entered the Christmas legend. Well, this period is over since A Christmas
Prince is on track to get there.
This turnip presents a young journalist, Amber, who dreams of
getting the scoop of her dreams (cliché) and who pretends to be an American
tutor to approach the Prince (cliché), a so-called play-boy (cliché), to
discover his secrets (cliché) and if he really wants to abdicate not to go on
the throne (cliché). She becomes very close to her little sister (cliché)
disabled (cliché) and ends up discovering that in reality, it is a man
concerned and adorable (cliché). His cousin wants to rise to the throne in his
place (cliche) while Amber and the Prince do not fall in love (cliché). Until
the day when all the secrets shatter unexpectedly. No I'm kidding. It was
downright awaited: this film is - I said it again and again - a bunch of
clichés. And as you can imagine, in the end, everything is fine that ends well.
The plot is stupid, ridiculous and it's warmed up. But that's
exactly why it worked! If you like Christmas TV movies, you'll love A Christmas
Prince because that's all you want to watch at this time of year. We want to
pose before a film full of benevolence and innocence where the bad guys never
reach their end and where love always ends up triumphing. This little budget
film has dreamed big and small because it is so bad that it becomes good:
I hated and worshiped #AChristmasPrince so much that I wish I could
relive the joy of watching it for the first time again and again
And that's not all ... the madness around this film is such that
the Netflix Community Manager had the misfortune to tweet, trying to ride the
wave:
To the 53 people who have watched A Christmas Prince every day for
the last 18 days: who hurt you?
And it caused an uproar, many Internet users blaming the platform
to spy on its users to know such data. Others have criticized the movie's
mockery, and others - not surprised by the fact that Netflix has this info -
have accused them of violating the privacy of their users. Contacted by the
BBC, the spokesperson for the platform reacted:
"These data represent overall viewing trends on the site and
not personal information about customers"
Anyway, no doubt that the Community Manager had to be seriously up
the straps, or worse, some thinking that for this kind of fault, he would have
even fired. This is to say the madness that provoked A Christmas Prince!
There is nothing better when you watch a romantic movie to know all
its faults and yet appreciate it beyond all reason. "A Christmas
Prince" fits perfectly in this category, so he takes the crown and becomes
the king for the next 5 years. There is so much to put in the face: his
gnian-gnian side assumed or his relative lack of means and ambition but the
film has for him other significant assets.
First, it falls at the right time. It is the ideal romantic film
for these end-of-year celebrations. I even wonder if we should not ask our
members to pass a law that prevents them from being watched during the summer
time and that it is reserved for winter time only. And for good reason, the
story is about Christmas. We meet Amber, a young journalist whose chance to
break through is reported in a fictitious country in the middle of a
constitutional crisis. Indeed, the heir to the smoky reputation has only a few
days to accept the succession of his father, who has been dead for almost a
year. Following a misunderstanding, Amber finds herself propelled tutor of the
young princess, which gives her an unprecedented access to the scenes of the
crisis but also to the Prince with whom a rapprochement takes place. You'll
understand, it's a love film to SECRET so much so that almost the entire
scenario is known from the first 10 minutes. Nevertheless, the whole reserve a
few surprises in its development.
Above all, the film displays a good communicative mood. Ok, it's
gnian-gnian but it's assumed as such and displayed as a badge of honor. The
main couple is composed of TV series actors and is doing very well. Rose McIver
in particular is really excellent in the role of Amber and even Ben Lamb, which
I did not find great in the trailer, does the job. Their scenes are super
romantic and amplified by the Christmas atmosphere, the snow, the crackling
fire. I forgive everything about this little film that has the merit of not
denying the long tradition of the Christmas love film and it will leave you a
smile on your face while making you want to love. This of course only under the
condition of leaving a priori to the door and look at it in optimal winter
conditions. He deserves it.
Conclusion
+ Love movie that does not try to revolutionize the genre, just to
have a great time.
+ The couple of actors, very well matched.
+ The Christmas atmosphere, romantic wish.
- A lack of means that is sometimes seen.
- You must be able to leave your a priori in the cloakroom.
